This week's assignment: "THE BLUES"

LADY SINGS THE BLUES...I always have a tendency to find the smile in everyone. And certainly, Billie Holiday had a beautiful smile. And a beautiful voice. But her life was so full of the blues...

Illustration Friday, back at it. Sometimes I don't get any spark from the topic, but I liked this week's.

Visitors [24 Aug 2007|11:49pm]

Dedicated to Popcorn, the burmese albino snake who was killed by a malicious child yesterday. She wasn't my snake, she was an acquaintance whom I met at the premiere of Snakes on a Plane last year. She was a very sweet snake who'd had a very hard life up until that point. And her owner brought her around to try to show people that snakes weren't necessarily all vicious monsters like most movies portray them.

Nothing quite like a toilet emergency.

All the guys will agree, it's a rather nasty stinging feeling :)

About an hour in painter and finished in photoshop :D

Space is one of the topics I find very inspiring to illustrate. Here is my vision of solar system. All proportions are very approximate! :-)

Discovery
Discovery is what this is all about.

I see today's assignment on Illustration: Friday. I haven't posted in quite some time. Mainly, because I was waiting for an assignment where I could post an existing image. I really don't have the time these days to go creating new work for this. So, with "Discovery" I immediately think of Charles Darwin. I've been thinking a bit about Charles Darwin lately because these lyrics I have been running through my head:

Well, George Lewis told the Englishman, the Italian and the Jew
"You can't open your mind, boys
To every conceivable point of view."
They got Charles Darwin trapped out there on Highway Five
Judge says to the High Sheriff,
"I want him dead or alive
Either one, I don't care."
High Water everywhere

~Bob Dylan

....and I want to create an image from these. I had originally just focused on the "Darwin on Highway Five" part but in copying them from Dylan's site, I'm curious about "George Lewis". So, I google him. Here's my discovery... Dylan in his infamous name-dropping makes a reference to a New Orleans jazz clarinetist. I google some images.

Now, I know where this piece is going. This was a great discovery!

Illustration Friday - Geek [06 Jul 2007|11:16am]

I wonder how many of us were tempted to post self portraits for this prompt... hmm. I'm not sure I'm really qualified, at least in the most common definition of the word-- I don't know much about computer systems.
But "geek" hasn't always been about computers. I think of it more as living in your head all the time and forgetting you ought to make yourself presentable to others. The outsides of your average geek are not appealing-- but the insides are full of wondering.

Here's a fairy procession-- the guys in the center bottom have some kind of bubble car, I think. There might be a few other interesting modes of transportation in here, too if you look around.

The first thing that came to mind was the Gary Numan video, which I then went and looked up to watch for reference.

This week's Illustration Friday's challenge theme is "Signs"...

And since today was the grand finale of "American Idol" and the winner had been announced, I've decided to marry the two topics together here...
